Cropping is important for a lot of reasons. First of all, cropping eliminates distractions that lurk in the backgrounds of photos. Electric outlets, telephone poles, and other distracting objects can detract from the main subject of the photo. So, cropping them out is usually a good idea. Also, cropping can add impact to a photo. It forces the viewer to pay attention to the most important aspects of a scene by eliminating other objects. Finally, another reason for why cropping is important is because it can add drama by providing a unique perspective. An example of this is shown below.

One thing to be aware of when cropping is resolution. You don’t want to crop in too much and then try to enlarge the image. What ends up happening is the image becomes pixelated and less sharp. Ideally, one would crop “with their feet” meaning they shoot the way they want the final crop to look. This isn’t always the case, however, so cropping in post-production is very common.
