The first time Ellie and I set foot on the University of Arkansas campus, she was 3 years old. We took an iconic photograph of Ellie in a shirt that said “I am the Legacy.” Having shot that photograph in February 2008 (yeah… 15 years ago), I had no idea how special it would become.
The Journey to Arkansas
When college applications started going out, Arkansas was in a stack of about 20 universities. I get the appeal of moving out of reach of family, friends, and the life you’ve built. Something about starting fresh has real appeal. So when Ellie told me her top picks included Georgia, Ole Miss, North Carolina, and others, I wasn’t surprised. I remember considering the same options my senior year at JHS.
As Ellie opened scholarship letters, visited campus, and talked with advisors, the stack narrowed one by one. And one at a time, the University of Arkansas kept rising to the top of the list. We did the official tour of U of A (multiple times) and Ellie was really impressed with the curriculum for her intended majors. I’m thankful she put so much thought into making the best decision for her future.
So to celebrate, we popped over to campus one recent morning to take some photos. Ellie chose a great dress in razorback red. We shot at both Old Main and the library.
Isn’t she the cutest razorback you’ve ever seen? The only correct answer is “yes.”
We shot some photographs on the senior walk, where I’m already dreaming of seeing her name etched into the concrete. This kid has such a bright future. She is a miracle and the absolute best daughter, sister, and friend.
For many of you, you’ve watched Ellie grow up on this very blog. You’ve seen how she overcomes tragedy with resilience and grace. You’ve seen her experience the world through courageous, inquisitive eyes. And best of all, you’ve seen her share her heart for those she loves.
Thanks for being here,
Dale
So proud of you, Ellie!! From a sweet little freckle-faced kiddo in my Pre-k class to a beautiful young woman, it has been a joy to watch you grow and blossom! You will do great things, girl!
Much love,
