There are 3 main reasons to have a last dance at your wedding reception. If you’re currently planning a wedding, take notes (or bookmark this post). First, what is a Last Dance at Your Wedding Reception? That’s when just the wedding couple share a dance on the dancefloor as the only two people in the room. Well, besides the photographer and the dj/band. Typically you’ll dance to a slow song as your guests filter outside, leaving you two there to spend a last moment together.

Check out Caroline and Daniel’s Wedding Reception at The Hillside Estate in DFW. It was beautifully orchestrated by Hunter Orcutt.

You get memorable photographs of the two of you. While not all wedding photographers stay until the end of your wedding day, my couples typically have me stay until the send-off or grand exit from the wedding reception. The last dance photos are often one of my very favorite images from the wedding day. First, it has the wedding couple in the photo (before the wedding, they’re typically solo shots). Second, it incorporates your reception scenery and lighting. Third, there aren’t 200 other people in the photo to detract attention. And most importantly, these are usually intimate (and sometimes emotional) which makes for a beautiful, storytelling image from the wedding reception.

The 2nd reason is it gives your guests time to get in line for your grand exit. Orchestrating grand exits can take a few minutes at the end of a wedding reception. In my opinion, we shouldn’t waste a single moment of the day if we can create beautiful imagery instead. While they are heading outside, why not take this opportunity to capture a beautiful moment?

Finally, the 3rd reason to have a last dance at your wedding reception is that you get some special time alone with your new spouse on the wedding day. Honestly, this will likely be one of the most vivid memories from your wedding day. There is so much hustle and bustle throughout the wedding day that you don’t always get any private time with your bride or groom. This is such a no-brainer reason to have a last dance at your wedding reception.

If you decided to have a last dance at your wedding reception, ensure your photographer knows so they can stay to capture the special moments!
